AGS Airports Limited is the United Kingdom-based owner of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton Airports. The company was formed in September 2014 by Ferrovial, a Spanish firm specialising in the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of transport, urban and services infrastructure, and Macquarie Group, an Australian company, composed of diversified financial services. Each own a 50% stake in the company.
Together, the airports handle more than 13 million passengers (2019) to 128 destinations.
Introduction to the collaboration with AGS Airports Group.
Copenhagen Optimization worked in close collaboration with key stakeholders from all three airports in the AGS Airports Group to gather a detailed understanding of the site-specific challenges and train them in using Better Forecast. This contributed to a successful and fast implementation process.
The Challenge:
AGS Airports – which owns Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports – engaged with Copenhagen Optimization (CopOpt) to improve the accuracy and efficiency of their passenger forecast. AGS’ key challenges were that the forecasting process was time-consuming, complex and dependent on a few specialized employees in each airport.
The Solution: Better Forecast
Better Forecast, provides detailed forecasts of passenger numbers, load factors, and presentation profiles on a flight-by-flight basis, for both arrivals and departures in AGS. Accuracy is of high priority since the forecast serves as the foundation for planning and correct staffing for Security. Since the solution is self- correcting, accuracy is constantly improving. The high level of detail and the increased forecast accuracy has improved the confidence level throughout the business and made the forecasting process easier and more time efficient for the key stakeholders.
Outcome achieved:
- Accuracy increased to 95% at 92% of the days.
- Time spent reduced by at least 67% – from two hours every at every forecast to 20 min. a week.
- Introducing one tool – and including stakeholders – has improved collaboration across the three AGS airports.
- The forecast now serves as an essential foundation for optimizing terminal planning in AGS Airports.
