London Luton Airport (LLA) has announced a new contract with Copenhagen Optimization (CopOpt) to introduce its Better Security platform, in order to improve the efficiency of LLA’s security search area.

Copenhagen, Denmark - Copenhagen Optimization will deliver the system through Better Airport, its cloud-based planning platform. Better Security has already been successfully implemented at other European airports, including Geneva Airport and Dublin Airport.

LLA has experienced rapid growth in recent years, and is the fastest-growing major London airport – last year, passenger numbers grew by 18.5%. To meet this increased demand, LLA is carrying out the biggest investment in its history to expand annual capacity and upgrade the terminal building. Improvements to the security area are a key part of this transformation, to allow the operations team to manage the increased passenger numbers.

Since its founding in December 2014, CopOpt has become a leader in airport operations planning by combining in-depth operations research with hands-on airport operations experience in numerous airports around the world. Better Airport – a cloud-based platform for all operational areas in an airport – enables airports to carry out all operational planning using one common platform.

As well as Better Security, LLA will also be introducing Better Forecast, which is part of the Better Airport platform. Both systems will help staff to predict the number of passengers using the security area at any given time, helping to ensure that the right number of staff are in place at peak times, avoiding delays.

Current users of Better Airport have reported reduced waiting times, reduced stress levels for both staff and passengers, and increased staff efficiency.

The airport is operated and developed by a consortium of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and Ardian, a major European investor.

LLA is currently investing over £110million to transform the airport and increase capacity from 12 million to 18 million passengers per year by 2020. The redevelopment plans will include a complete redesign of the terminal, bringing in new and exciting retail and dining options, and major upgrades to transport links, including better road access to the M1, new car parking facilities, a remodeled bus and coach interchange and improved rail links to Luton Airport Parkway station. In addition, plans for a new £200 million light rail system linking the airport with Luton Airport Parkway station have been announced and are anticipated to be completed by 2020. The project is being delivered by the airport owners, LLAL – a company owned by Luton Borough Council.
