The four critical needs for airports of all sizes following Covid-19.

Copenhagen, Denmark – Over the last few weeks, industry colleagues have asked us how Covid-19 is affecting our business and the impact we think the sudden drop in air traffic will have on our business. How do airports run an efficient airport operation when business isn’t business as unusual?  Having never been in this situation, we don’t have any historical references, but we have taken the time out to consider the impact of this unusual situation.

Reaction from the industry

The consequences on air passenger traffic is significant – and by the time this article is published, numbers and facts will already have changed. Latest update on BBC said “Coronavirus outbreak to cost airlines almost $30b” Source BBC

According to the latest estimates by the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), more than 130 airlines have cut international services or canceled all operations to/from mainland China since January. This week flights to Northern Italy are also suspended.

Four key needs

  1. Airports need to be able to adjust quickly.
  2. They need to be able to get a full overview of what the impact is on their operations if flights are canceled.
  3. They need to understand the impact on staffing and budget implications.
  4. They need to be able to run multiple scenarios and be presented with the best plans immediately.

A nightmare if done in multiple Excel models!
