Client overview: Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN)
Stockholm Arlanda Airport is Sweden’s largest airport, and the third largest in the Nordic countries. The airport and is a gateway between Stockholm and other Swedish cities as well as the rest of the world. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is part of Swedavia, a Swedish airport operator, which owns and runs 10 Swedish airports.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport offers about 107 non-stop routes, of which 87 are abroad and 20 are domestic. In addition to the non-stop routes, they also have many charter destinations.

Introduction to the collaboration with Stockholm Arlanda Airport
Swedavia, the operator of 10 Swedish airports, engaged with Copenhagen Optimization (CopOpt) to create an assessment of the quality of the capacity planning for Stockholm Arlanda.
The Solution: A capacity planning assessment
The assessment commenced with a review of the current Swedavia approach to capacity planning. The focus was to accurately describe the current planning scheme and building on this, to identify options for improving the planning and execution of the operation. This was done by comparing to a 5-step best
practice capacity planning methodology developed by Copenhagen Optimization.
Initiatives were presented aimed at closing the identified gaps allowing Stockholm Arlanda to significantly improve their planning capabilities. Also, the assessment identified significant opportunities for better use of the current infrastructure for instance by reduction of buffers and changed allocations.
The project has also improved communication between the operation and capacity planners – thereby identifying opportunities for linking the operational reality and the future capacity planning closer together.
Outcome achieved
Identified several initiatives with a
large impact
requiring only a low effort.
Established a roadmap for
improving capacity planning
at Stockholm Arlanda.
